Captain Bartt D. Owens was born on 17 October 1971 in Middletown, Ohio. He died on 22 February 2002 in an overwater helicopter crash while on a training mission in support of the Global War on Terrorism.
CPT Owens was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in Aviation upon graduation from the United States Military Academy in 1994, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in International Relations.
CPT Owens' past assignments include Section Leader and Flight Platoon Leader in Bravo Company, 7th Battalion, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky. He also served as the Battalion S-1 and as the Alpha Company Flight Operations Officer.
CPT Owens joined the Night Stalkers in September 1999. After graduating from the MH-47E Aircraft Basic Mission Qualification Course, he served as a Platoon Leader in Echo Company, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne). As the only Echo Company, 160th SOAR(Abn) Platoon Leader, CPT Owens served as one of the advance personnel as the Company began operations in the Republic of Korea. He later deployed his unit to multiple locations across the Pacific Command in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.
CPT Owens was a graduate of the Aviation Officer Basic Course, the Aviation Officer Advanced Course, and the Combined Arms Services and Staff School. He was rated in the OH-58A/C, CH-47D, and MH-47E helicopters.
CPT Owens' awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal (w/1 OLC), National Defense Service Medal, Parachutist Badge, Army Aviator Badge, and Air Assault Badge. He was posthumously awarded the Legion of Merit and the Air Medal.
CPT Owens is survived by his wife Leah; their daughters, Megan and Lauren; and his mother, Penny. He is laid to rest in Middletown Ohio, at Woodside Cemetery, Section 17, Lot 1299.
