Chief Warrant Officer Four (Ret) Richard E. Campbell, 66, died on 7 November 2012. He was born 6 November 1946 in Morgantown, West Virginia, to the late William Lewis and Betty Marie Campbell. He grew up in West Virginia and Maryland, and graduated from Middletown High School in Maryland.
Upon graduation from Gettysburg College in 1968, CW4 (Ret) Richard E. Campbell enlisted in the U.S. Army and served over 25 years until his retirement in 1994. For most of his military career, CW4 (Ret) Campbell was a Rotary Wing Pilot, Instructor Pilot, Standardization Instructor Pilot, Instrument Flight Examiner, and Fixed Wing Pilot accumulating over 8,600 flight hours.
Richard was a veteran of the Vietnam War, Grenada Conflict, and Operation DESERT SHIELD. He served 4 years as a Night Stalker with the 160th Special Operations Aviation Group as a Ghostrider from 1983 to 1987. His depth of experience, professionalism, and work ethic were instrumental in developing the foundation and character of the current 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne).
CW4 (Ret) Campbell is survived by his wife of 43 years, Cynthia, and is interred in Arlington National Cemetery. He had expressed a desire to her to assist Night Stalker soldiers and dependents advance their educational goals.
