Staff Sergeant Shamus O. Goare died on 28 June 2005 in eastern Afghanistan when his MH-47D Chinook helicopter, #146, was shot down by an enemy rocket propelled grenade while flying in to rescue the members of a SEAL team during Operation RED WINGS.

SSG Goare was born on 28 May 1976 in Ohio. He volunteered for service in the U.S. Army in 1994 as a Huey Helicopter Repairer and attended Basic Combat Training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Rucker, Alabama. From December 1994 to October 1996, SSG Goare was assigned to India Company, 158th Aviation Battalion as a Utility Helicopter Repairer. In October 1996, he was reassigned as a UH-1 Crew Chief to 1st USA Support Battalion, Multinational Force and Observers, Sinai, Egypt. Upon completion of a one-year tour in Egypt, SSG Goare was assigned as a Crew Chief to 12th Aviation Brigade in Fort Belvoir, Virginia. From January to May 1999, he attended the Heavy Helicopter Repairer Course at Fort Eustis, Virginia and, upon completion, became a Chinook Helicopter Repairer. In June 1999, he was assigned to Charlie Company, 52nd Aviation Regiment, Camp Humphreys, Korea, where he performed duties as a CH-47 Mechanic until May 2000. In June 2000, SSG Goare was assigned to the 160th Special Operations Aviation Training Company at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Upon completion of the Basic Mission Qualification Course (Green Platoon), was assigned as a Flight Engineer for Bravo Company, 3rd Battalion at Hunter Army Airfield, Georgia.

SSG Goare was a graduate of the Primary Leadership Development Course, Basic Noncommissioned Officer Course, Special Operations Training Course, the Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape (SERE) Level-C Course, Utility Helicopter Repairer Course, and the Medium Helicopter Repairer Course.

SSG Goare's military awards and decorations include the Air Medal (w/"V" Device), Air Medal (w/Numeral 3), Army Commendation Medal (w/1 OLC), Joint Service Achievement Medal, Army Achievement Medal (w/3 OLC), Good Conduct Medal (3rd Award), National Defense Service Medal (w/2 Bronze Service Stars), Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon (w/Numeral 2), Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (w/Numeral 2), Multinational Forces and Observers Medal (w/Numeral 2), Senior Aviation Badge, and the Sharpshooter Qualification Badge (Rifle). He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal (w/"V" Device), and the Combat Action Badge.

SSG Goare is survived by his parents, Charlie and Judy. He is laid to rest in Danville, Ohio, at St. Luke Cemetery. Hangar #7902 at Hunter Army Airfield, Georgia, is dedicated in honor of the crew of Aircraft Tail #146 as Turbine 33 Hangar.
