Chief Warrant Officer Four Terrance “Terry” W. Geer died 19 August 2009 when his MH-60K Black Hawk helicopter, #378, crashed on Mount Massive during a training mission near Leadville, Colorado.
CW4 Geer was born on 28 June 1969 and was a native of Casper, Wyoming. He volunteered for service in the U.S. Navy in February 1989. After serving five years in the U.S. Navy, CW4 Geer was accepted into the Army Warrant Officer Program at Fort Rucker, Alabama. Upon graduation from the UH-1 Aircraft Qualification Course in 1995, CW4 Geer was assigned to the 82nd Air Ambulance Medical Company at Fort Riley, Kansas, as an Aeromedical Evacuation Pilot and Instructor Pilot. In 1998, after completing the Instrument Flight Examiner Course, CW4 Geer was assigned to the Combat Maneuver Training Center at Hohenfels, Germany, as a Standardization Instructor Pilot. After a successful assessment in 2002, CW4 Geer was assigned to Delta Company, 1st Battalion, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne) at Fort Campbell, Kentucky as an Instructor Pilot and Aviation Safety Officer.
CW4 Geer is a combat veteran with 12 deployments, 11 in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM and one in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.
CW4 Geer's military education includes Warrant Officer Candidate School, Aviation Warrant Officer Basic Course, Aviation Warrant Officer Advanced Course, Electronics Warfare Officer Course, the Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape (SERE) Course, UH-60 Aircraft Qualification Course, UH-1 and UH-60 Instructor Pilot Courses, Rotary Wing Instructor Flight Examiner Course, and the Aviation Safety Officer Course.
CW4 Geer’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (w/1 OLC), Air Medal (w/"V" and Numeral 2), Air Medal (w/Numeral 11), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal (w/1 OLC), Army Achievement Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Valorous Unit Award, Navy Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal (w/2 Bronze Service Stars), Southwest Asia Service Medal (w/3 Bronze Service Stars), Afghanistan Campaign Medal (w/1 Bronze Service Star), Iraq Campaign Medal (w/1 Bronze Service Star), Global War On Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War On Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Navy Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Kuwait Liberation Medal (Saudi Arabia), Kuwait Liberation
Medal (Government of Kuwait), Navy Aircrew Insignia Badge, Army Aviator Badge, and the Senior Army Aviator Badge. He was posthumously awarded the Meritorious Service Medal.
CW4 Geer is survived by his wife, Gina; their children, Braden and Emma; his mother, Barbara; and his brother, Tony. He is laid to rest in Centralia, Kansas, at St. Patrick’s Coal Creek Cemetery. The 1st Battalion aircraft maintenance hangar is dedicated as IRON 378 Hangar in honor of Terry and the crew of MH-60K Black Hawk Tail #378.
