Chief Warrant Officer Five Walter M. Fox was born on 19 September 1952 in Reading, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Mahonoy Area High School in 1970 and volunteered for service in the U.S. Army in 1971 as an OH-58 Scout Helicopter Pilot. CW5 Fox began his career serving consecutive overseas tours in Germany and Korea. Upon returning from overseas, he received CH-47A/B transition training and served as the Company Aviation Safety Officer for the 179th Aviation Company at Fort Carson, Colorado. In 1980, he volunteered to return to Germany to serve with the 180th Aviation Company at Schwabisch Hall and then with the 228th Aviation Regiment at Fort Kobbe, Panama. Following the Instructor Pilot Course, CW5 Fox was assigned to Charlie Company, 7th Battalion, 101st Aviation Regiment from 1988 to 1991. He once again found himself deployed overseas, this time to Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, in response to the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait.

Shortly after returning from the desert, CW5 Fox joined the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne), serving as the Standardization Instructor Pilot from 1993 to 1996 for Alpha Company, 2nd Battalion at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. His technical and tactical competence was essential to the success of numerous worldwide deployments, including Operation UPHOLD DEMOCRACY. CW5 Fox’s successes and achievements as an MH-47 Flight Lead while assigned to Alpha Company were unparalleled. His expertise and reputation resulted in the special operations forces the Regiment supports requesting him by name.

CW5 Fox’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal (w/Numeral 3), Army Commendation Medal (w/3 OLC), Army Achievement Medal (w/5 OLC), Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Master Army Aviator Badge, and Air Assault Badge. He was posthumously awarded the Legion of Merit.

CW5 Fox died on 7 March 1996 during a night training mission when his MH-47E Chinook helicopter, #465, crashed near Russellville, Kentucky.

CW5 Fox is survived by his wife, Nancy; son, Tom; daughter, Amber; foster son, Richard; mother, Marie; and his brother, George. He is laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery at a group burial site, Section 60, Site 7812.
