In three months, we will gather at One World Trade Center in New York to celebrate those who served during the Battle of Mogadishu. Here's a little background about the historic mission.

Battle of Mogadishu

Elements of the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, known as Night Stalkers, were deployed to Somalia in August of 1993 as part of Task Force Ranger which included Army Rangers, Delta Force, and other U.S. Joint Special Operations Forces. The mission was to capture key lieutenants of the warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid in support of the broader international effort to bring food and humanitarian aid to a starving population and to restore peace in the war-torn country.

The mission on the third of October was the Fourth mission executed to date. However, it would be the one history would document in print, movies, and folklore.

The 160th found itself engulfed in a protracted daytime urban fight. Two Black Hawk helicopters were shot down by Rocket-Propelled Grenades, resulting in the capture of pilot Mike Durant and the death of five Night Stalkers, eleven from the Ground Force, and dozens wounded.

Thus began a race against time to support the Ground Force now in heavy combat. Night Stalkers flew back into the maelstrom repeatedly over the day and into the night. They navigated dark and perilous city skies with precision, supporting ground forces and evacuating casualties. The unit's dedication to mission and commitment to comrades never wavered, embodying the motto Night Stalkers Don't Quit!
